Local voices are making the case for the Methow River. In a new story from Public News Service, tribal members and business owners explain why sections of the Methow deserve an Outstanding Resource Waters designation, the highest level of water quality protection in Washington.
Julie Muyllaert, co-owner of Methow Cycle and Sport in Winthrop, describes how the valley’s economy has shifted toward recreation and tourism, and how her business depends on a healthy river. Mark Miller, a descendant of the Methow Band, speaks to his people’s long history in the valley and the chance to protect these waters for future generations. As he puts it, “We have an opportunity to affect the future.”
The Methow is one of four Washington water systems nominated for the designation, which would help safeguard it from pollution, development, and mining.
